Announcing Titans of Space PLUS for Gear VR

I wasn’t planning to go back to Mobile VR so soon!

Titans of Space 2.0 gets a comfort mode

Despite the positive reactions Titans of Space has received since the initial version was released over three years ago, there has been one nagging problem throughout: it uses artificial locomotion to sweep players along from planet to planet, accelerating them at a blistering pace along curved paths while rotating their frame of reference, performing lateral moves, and so on. Even though I made an effort to be gentle with the player, it “breaks all the rules”.

Titans of Space 2.0

Many months since posting here! The last release of Titans of Space was v1.8 on Oculus Share, 9 months ago. I wish I could say I’ve been working on an update Titans for all of those 9 months, but I’ve been helping out on other projects, most notably Apollo 11 VR, and of course all the usual things happening in meatspace that take time away from VR development.

Titans of Space [Classic] released, works with Oculus Runtime 0.7

Titans of Space is over 2 years old. I’ve spent a lot of the spare time across 6% of my life on this thing! Yikes! I feel very fortunate that it has seen a lot of downloads across several platforms, and I remain encouraged to push ahead for stronger market penetration and add as much value as I can to it.

Mars Is A Real Place has been released!

I’m happy to announce that I’m sending a new VR experience out into the wild, and this time I’m charging a small amount for it. Despite the relatively simple screenshots and premise, I’m hopeful that the few people that take a chance on it will enjoy it. It’s definitely not for everyone, but like all my VR demos and experiences, I tend to build what I would love to see for myself.

The Narration Add-On is here! (Cardboard first, other platforms to follow)

When I first released Titans of Space in the middle of 2013 (wow… time flies), one of the top requests I started getting ever since was for a voiceover / narration of some kind. At first I figured this would be no problem, but it’s a pretty big job to get the script written, and then record the voiceover for all of it. Not only that, but setting the right tone and covering fresh topics is a challenge.

Titans of Space (Gear VR) - Recent Optimizations

I mentioned in my previous post that I removed stereoscopic 3D in favor of player comfort and a few bells and whistles. I then updated the post stating that I was able to provide an option to enable a 3D cockpit. This post goes into some detail.

Optimizing "TNG Engineering" for the DK2

After releasing TNG Engineering for the DK2 (which is now up on Oculus Share!), I received some requests to make a post about optimizing this to run so smoothly for so many.

Titans of Space update, plus tough Gear VR decisions

Titans of Space has been updated to v1.70 for the Oculus Rift DK2. There are a lot of changes in this update, the highlights of which are: improved performance, a smoother experience, some planets and stars getting another facelift, support for more languages, a new zoom mechanic, a few new options, etc. It is built against Oculus’ new Unity plugin 0.4.3.1, which is working extremely well, and requires Oculus Runtime 0.4.2 or newer.

Titans of Space has been ported to Samsung GearVR

To me, Oculus and Samsung’s partnership in bringing the GearVR into existence is pivotal in the rebirth of VR, especially when it comes to going mainstream, and I couldn’t be more proud to be a tiny part of it as an early developer.

Final thoughts on GDC

Today I visited with Technical Illusions to try out the CastAR. They have a room with three different prototypes running three different demos, all highlighting different aspects of the AR experience. I was so engrossed in what I saw that I completely forgot to ask about the VR clip-on and where they are with that. In any case, their HD prototype is stunning, and I was pleased to realize that even if the 3D world you're looking at extends past the physical surface with the retroreflective material, there's no conflict because the retroreflective material doesn't have any detailed features to focus on. So, I'm thankful they took the time to demo it for me and I'm quite glad that I backed it. Plus, the pins they were giving out are covered with retroreflective material, how cool is that? :)

Thoughts on GDC 2014 so far

Well, it's definitely the year VR takes off, that's for sure. Everywhere you look, VR VR VR! Absolutely impossible for a developer to ignore the trend now. I saw several booths utilizing the Rift as though it was just part of everyday life. And still more booths showcasing technologies that will clearly benefit VR content.
